With a new netball season here, many players are searching for the ideal pair of shoes to help them perform their best on court. However, with so many options and factors to consider, finding the right pair for your playing position can be a daunting task.

To make this process less overwhelming, Mizuno has developed a guide to help you choose the best netball shoes for your game. Read on to learn how to select the perfect pair for your position.

Selecting the Ideal Netball Shoe for Your Position

Whether you’re a mid-courter, shooter, or defender, a particular shoe may be more suitable for your playing position on court.

Mid Courters (C,WA,WD)

As mid-courters cover more ground on the court, we recommend something light, such as the Wave Luminous 2 NB or the Wave Phantom 3 NB, as you cover more ground across the court. The Luminous 2 and Phantom 3 NB also provide ample grip, suitable for mid-courters who are rapidly changing direction. These shoes both provide the perfect balance of lightweight, cushioning, grip and support, making them the perfect all-rounder for mid-courters.

Notable professional players who have worn these models include Maisie Nankivell, Karla Pretorius, Ainsleyana Puleiata.

Defenders & Attackers (GK, GD, GA, GS)

For end-courters, we recommend the Wave Stealth Neo NB and Wave Momentum 3 NB, which provide more cushioning to support the impact of jumping and landing, which can be more frequent for end-courters throughout the duration of games. These models include MIZUNO ENERZY Core foam which delivers maximum comfort under foot (for landing) and energy return (for jumping).

Notable professional players who have worn these models include: Jodi-Ann Ward, Jhaniele Fowler, Matilda McDonell, Latanya Wilson.

Junior Players (All Positions)

For Junior players transitioning into a netball-specific shoe at a young age, we recommend our junior shoe, the Stealth Star Jr 2 NB

This model provides a supportive upper, dynamic cushioning and cushioning and a durable, grippy outsole. These all-round features make the Stealth Star Jr 2 the perfect shoe for young stars in the making.

Additional Considerations

Despite our position-specific recommendations, the Mizuno Netball range is very versatile. For example, while we recommend mid-courters opt for our lighter, grippier models, some players in this position may prefer greater cushioning found in the Stealth Neo NB. Similarly, a defender may prefer the lightest feel possible in a netball shoe, leading them to choose the Luminous 2 or Phantom 3, which are traditionally suited to mid-court players.

Still, many netballers today use running shoes on court. Below, we explain the differences and benefits between a netball shoe and a running shoe.

Running Shoes v Netball Shoes

The high intensity and dynamic movements of netball place a significant demand on the footwear used by players. A generic trainer or running shoe doesn’t provide the lateral or medial support to accommodate these demands, particularly when players rapidly change direction or jump and land in awkward positions. Conversely, netball shoes allow players to remain stable in their movements and reduce the risk of injury.

Outsole & Durability

As well as being more stable than running shows, netball shoes are also more durable. Netball outsoles are made from strong rubber compounds that provide a greater, longer-lasting grip suited for lateral movements, jumping and landing. So, going for a netball shoe over a running shoe will not only help you perform on court but also save you money in the long run.

All Mizuno Netball Shoes are approved by the Australian Podiatry Association so you can be reassured that each model has been put through a rigorous testing process to ensure they can handle to strict physical demands of the game.
